HOW TO PLAY

Capture, build,
or leave a card.

Cassino is a card-capture game for two. There is no real money and nothing to bet. Start with four cards each and four on the table; play one hand card every turn.

01

Pair or combine

A 9 can capture a loose 9, a 5 + 4, and a build of 9 together. Select your hand card, toggle the table targets, then press Capture. Any valid selection of complete groups works.

A 9 takes every selected group that totals 9. Five plus four is another group of 9.

02

Keep the card that takes your build

Put a 5 on a table 4 and announce 9, while holding another 9. Choose the table 4 and Build value 9, then press Build. Only a 9 can take the resulting stack.

Five on four makes a single build of 9. Keep another 9 in hand.

03

Trail a card onto the table

When you own no build, you may trail any hand card even if a capture was possible. Pick it and press Trail; it stays face up for the next player.

The five stays on the table for a later capture.

Face cards, raises and multiple builds

Standard values are ace 1 and 2–10 at face value. Jacks, queens and kings take exactly one matching loose face card; they never combine or build. Either player may raise a single build by adding a card while holding the new value. Ownership transfers to the raiser.

Several groups of one value form a multiple build: a 9 added to a 5 + 4 build makes two groups of 9. A multiple build cannot be raised, but a complete group of its value may be added. Keep a matching hand card for every build you still own. While you own any build, Trail is unavailable; capture it, capture other cards while retaining its match, or build again.

Six rounds, the last capture and options

The non-dealer starts, and the dealer alternates each deal. When both hands empty, deal four more each without adding table cards. The sixth round is the last. After all cards are played, loose cards and builds go to the last capturer without a sweep. If nobody captured all deal, leftovers stay unclaimed.

Royal Cassino makes J 11, Q 12, K 13 and ace 1 or 14. Pick an ace value before capturing or building. Draw Cassino refills your hand to four after each play until the stock empties. Sweeps count can be switched off; clearing the table is still marked.

A worked 10–2 deal

With 28 cards, 8 spades, two aces, 10♦, 2♠ and one sweep: 3 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 10. The opponent's other two aces score 2. A sweep on the final play still counts. Leftovers never add a sweep.

First to 21 after a complete deal

If either player has at least 21, the higher total wins. If both totals are tied at or above 21, play another deal. The scorecard separates all six categories.

WATCH WHAT YOU LEAVE

Keep the match.
Count the spades.

Protect your build

A build promises a future capture. Keep its matching card and watch whether the opponent can steal or raise it. Build controls only offer values still in your hand.

Value the special cards

Aces, 10♦ and 2♠ score directly. Spades help the spade majority; collecting 27 cards guarantees the card majority. A larger capture can still leave an easy sweep.

Remember the last capture

The last capturer takes all leftovers. Late in the deal, count what remains and preserve a capture for the final turns. The public play log records what was shown.

QUICK ANSWERS

Cassino questions

Is Cassino a gambling game?

No. Cassino is a traditional card-capture game for two players, scored in points. There is no real money, no chips and nothing to bet, here or in the classic rules.

Casino or Cassino: which spelling is right?

Both are used for the card game; "Cassino" is the older spelling and the one that avoids confusion with gambling venues. This page is about the card game only.

How do you capture cards?

Play a card whose value equals a table card, or equals the total of two or more table cards, or equals a build. In one play you may take every such match at once. Jacks, queens and kings only pair with a card of the same rank, one at a time.

How do builds work?

Lay a card on table cards so they total a value you hold, and announce it: a 5 on a 4 announced as 9. Only a 9 can then take it. Either player may raise a single build (a 1 on it makes 10 if they hold a 10) and becomes its owner. Multiple builds, with two or more groups of the same value, cannot be raised.

Can you trail when you have a build?

No. While your build is on the table you must capture (anything, not only the build) or make another build. Trailing is only legal when you own no build.

How is Cassino scored?

Eleven points per deal: most cards 3, most spades 1, Big Cassino (10♦) 2, Little Cassino (2♠) 1, and 1 for each ace. Sweeps add 1 each. Points are counted at the end of the deal, and the first player to 21 wins.

What are Big Casino and Little Casino?

The 10 of diamonds (2 points) and the 2 of spades (1 point). Each is worth its points to whoever captures it.

Do sweeps count?

Yes by default: clearing every card from the table scores 1 point. You can switch sweeps off in the options.

What is Royal Cassino?

An option where face cards have values: jack 11, queen 12, king 13, and an ace counts 1 or 14 as you choose. They can then combine and build like number cards.

What happens to the cards left on the table?

After the last deal of the round, whatever is left, including unfinished builds, goes to the player who made the last capture. It does not count as a sweep.

How many players can play?

Our version is for two: you against the computer. Three- and four-player Cassino exist; four players in partnerships is the usual table version.

How good are the computer opponents?

Easy grabs the biggest capture and never builds. Standard values aces, the 10♦, the 2♠ and spades, builds when it is safe, and avoids setting up a sweep for you. Expert also remembers every card that has left play and weighs what you can take in reply. No level sees your hand or the stock.
