HOW TO PLAY

The Golf card game

Build the lowest grid across nine holes. This is the card game for two to four players; Golf Solitaire is a different game.

Play a practice hole ↑
01

Flip two, then draw and swap

Deal six cards to each player in three columns of two. Turn two cards of your choice face up. Beginning left of the dealer, draw the top stock card or take the visible discard. Swap it into any slot without peeking first. The replacement stays face up and the old card is discarded.

The slot stays where it is. Only its card changes.

02

Complete a column for zero

Equal ranks in a complete vertical column cancel. Two sevens make zero in a two-row grid; a jack and queen do not match, even though both are worth ten. In a nine-card grid you need three equal ranks in a column. Cards remain in their slots after matching.

The lime outline marks a complete matching column.

03

Discard and flip, or close the hole

If you do not want a stock draw, discard it and turn one hidden slot face up. A card taken from the discard must be swapped in. When your grid is fully face up at the end of your turn, you close: everyone else gets one last turn. Reveal the remaining cards and add each grid's score to its total. The lowest total after nine holes wins; tied players share.

Closing gives the other players one more chance to improve.

Four-card, nine-card and stock rules

4-card Golf

Two columns of two. This table keeps the same public flip-two setup and column pairs. Classic four-card Golf often uses private peeking and knocking; that memory variant and card powers are outside these rules.

9-card Golf

Three columns of three. Turn two up at setup and cancel only full vertical triples. Rows, diagonals and 2×2 squares do not cancel. No closer penalty applies at any grid size.

When the stock runs out

Finish the current turn. Keep the top discard face up and reshuffle the rest once. If the stock empties again, or there is nothing to recycle, reveal and score the hole immediately after that turn. Previously discarded cards can return to any hidden position after a shuffle.

NINE HOLES · LOW TOTAL

Golf scoring

Count every unpaired card. A fully revealed column of the same rank scores zero, even a pair of twos that would otherwise total −4. With three rows, a pair alone still counts: all three must match.

For example, 7♣/7♥, K♠/A♦ and 2♣/Q♥ score 0 + 1 + 8 = 9. Visible score counts only face-up cards, so a hidden card can change it when revealed.

Choose nine or eighteen holes. There is no penalty for closing without the lowest score. Optional jokers are −2 and match only each other; twos remain −2.

Golf strategy

Compare the whole column

A seven may be better than a king if it completes a column for zero. Protect completed matches. A two already scores −2, so pairing two twos for zero can increase your score.

Use the public discard

Taking it gives certainty, but commits you to a swap. Drawing the stock gives a choice after seeing the new card. A visible high card is often the best replacement; a hidden slot could contain a useful low card.

Choose when to close

A low visible score is incomplete while cards remain hidden. Compare how many unknown cards each player has. Closing ends your own chances to improve and gives every opponent one final turn.

Three computer levels

Easy swaps into hidden slots almost at random and ignores pairs. Standard completes visible pairs and replaces high cards. Expert compares the discard against possible stock cards, estimates complete-column scores from the unknown pool, and weighs closing. No level knows a face-down card, including its own. Recycled discards return to the unknown pool.

QUICK ANSWERS

Golf card game FAQ

How do you play 6-card Golf?

Lay six cards in three columns of two and turn any two up. Draw from the stock or discard, then swap into your grid. You may discard a stock draw and flip one hidden card instead. Equal-rank columns cancel; the lowest total after nine holes wins.

How are 4-card and 9-card Golf different?

Four cards use a 2×2 grid, nine cards a 3×3 grid. This table uses two public setup flips for all sizes. Two matching cards cancel a two-row column; nine-card grids require three. Classic private-peek/knock four-card Golf is a different variant.

What are the card values?

Ace 1, two −2, 3–10 face value, jack and queen 10, king 0. Optional jokers are −2, with twos still −2.

Do pairs of twos or jokers cancel?

Yes. A complete equal-rank column scores zero, including twos and jokers. Two negative twos therefore become zero rather than −4. Both jokers match each other; a joker does not match a two.

When does a hole end?

When a player completes a turn with every grid card face up, everyone else gets exactly one final turn. Then all cards are revealed and scored. There is no closer penalty. A second stock exhaustion also ends the hole after the current turn.

How many holes are in a game?

Nine by default, or eighteen in Options. Totals carry between holes, the dealer rotates clockwise, and equal lowest totals share the match.

Can two players play Golf?

Yes. Choose two, three or four seats in Options. Two-player closing gives just the other player one final turn.

Is this Golf Solitaire?

No. Golf Solitaire clears a layout for one player. Here, players compete to build the lowest card grid across several deals.

Can I take the discard and discard it again?

No. A card taken from the discard must replace a grid card. Only a stock draw can be discarded directly, followed by a required flip while you have a hidden card.

How good are the computer players?

Easy ignores pair plans, Standard builds columns and replaces high cards, and Expert estimates unseen values and the cost of closing. All decisions use public cards and the bot's drawn card only; its own face-down grid remains unknown.

Can I rearrange my grid?

No. Slots stay fixed because their columns determine the score. Use numbers 1–9 or the arrow keys to select a slot. Open an opponent's miniature grid to inspect its visible cards.

Is it free, and can I play with friends?

Practice against computer opponents is free in your browser without a download or account. To play with friends, open a HopLobby lobby and send one link: our party games run in the browser too.

Golf at this table

Turn two grid cards face up to start. Draw from the stock or take the discard, then swap the drawn card into any slot. A stock draw may instead be discarded, followed by one required flip.

Aces 1 · twos −2 · 3–10 face value · jacks/queens 10 · kings 0. Optional jokers are −2, and twos stay −2. A whole vertical column of equal ranks scores zero, including two twos or jokers. Nine-card grids need three matching cards.

Your last face-up card closes the hole at the end of your turn. Everyone else gets one final turn, then all grids are shown and scored. No closer penalty. The stock reshuffles once; the second exhaustion scores after the current turn.

The four-card option uses public flips and column pairs, rather than classic private peeking/knocking. Grid slots are fixed. Choose 4/6/9 cards, 9/18 holes, jokers and 2–4 seats in Options.
