ONE SUIT COUNTS
Thirty-One scoring
and who loses a life
Count the cards of your best suit only. Three of a kind (three cards of one rank) counts 30.5: it beats any 30 and loses only to 31. The host can make it 30 or switch it off.
At the showdown the lowest hand loses a life. A knocker who is lowest loses two (an option the host can turn off). If the knocker ties for lowest, the knocker is safe and the others tied lose a life; any other tie costs every tied player a life. The host can choose the stricter rule where everyone tied for lowest loses, the knocker included (two lives when the double penalty is on).
Worked showdown with four players: you knocked with K♠ Q♠ 6♠ (26). Wren has 9♥ 8♥ 4♥ (21), Ash 9♦ 8♦ K♣ (17), Rowan three 7s (30.5). Ash is lowest and loses one life.

KNOCK BEFORE THEY DO
Thirty-One strategy
for every table
Pick a suit early
Two cards of one suit with an ace or a face card are a strong start. Throw cards outside that suit, and change suit only when the new one is clearly worth more.
Take the discard when it raises your hand
A face-up card that adds to your best suit is a sure gain; a stock card is a gamble. Everyone sees what you take, though, so they learn which suit you collect.
Knock early with more players
With more hands at the table, someone is more likely to be weak, so a middling hand is safer to knock on. With two players, knock only when you are clearly ahead: there is just one other hand to beat. When the Standard computers play each other at four players, a knocker ends up lowest about one time in seven.
Watch what the others take and throw
A player who took the 9 of spades and then threw a King of hearts is collecting spades, and probably holds 19 or more. Don’t throw spades to them, and be careful about knocking while they build.
Mind your lives
On your last life, wait for a stronger hand before you knock: a knocker who is lowest loses two. With lives to spare you can knock more boldly.
QUICK ANSWERS
Thirty-One FAQ: common questions
Can you play 31 online for free?
Yes, here, against the computer in your browser with no download or account. Pick 2 to 7 players and a skill level.
When can you knock in Thirty-One?
On your turn, instead of drawing, from your second turn of a round onward, and only if nobody has knocked yet. Everyone else then gets one more turn before the showdown.
Does three of a kind count?
Yes: three cards of the same rank score 30.5, which beats any ordinary 30 and loses only to 31. The host can set it to 30 or switch it off.
What happens when you hit 31?
The round ends immediately, even before you discard. You win the round and every other player loses a life. This also applies if you are dealt 31.
Who loses a life, and what about ties?
The lowest hand at the showdown loses one life. If the knocker is alone at the bottom, they lose two. If the knocker ties for lowest, the knocker is safe and the others tied lose a life. Any other tie costs every tied player a life. The host can switch to “all tied lose”, which also takes lives from a tied knocker.
How many lives do you have?
Three. The host can choose four or five. At zero you are out, and the last player left wins.
How many players can play?
Two to seven. With more players, knock earlier: more hands means someone is more likely to be lower than you.
Is 31 the same as Scat or Blitz?
Yes. Scat and Blitz are other names for the same draw-and-discard game; “Blitz” is also what we call an instant 31.
How are the cards valued?
Aces 11, face cards 10, number cards face value, counting only cards of one suit. The table shows your best suit total as you play.
How good are the computer players?
Easy always draws from the stock and knocks only on 27 or more. Standard takes any discard that raises its hand and knocks at a fixed bar that drops as the round goes on. Expert plays like Standard with two differences: it knocks when its hand is clearly ahead of what the others usually hold after the turns they have had, and it takes a discard only when it beats an average card from the stock. Against three Standard players, Expert wins about 38% of four-player matches, Standard about 26% and Easy about 4%. No level sees your hand or the stock.
How long is a match?
With four players, about eight or nine rounds, and you get about three turns a round (a little more against Expert, which knocks later). Two players finish in three or four rounds. Your match is saved in this browser, so a reload brings you back to the same turn.
Can I play with the keyboard?
Yes. D draws from the stock, T takes the discard, K knocks, and 1 to 4 discard the card in that place in your hand. H gives a hint and U takes back your last move in practice, until you draw from the stock.
